Abject Cutie (Shapeshifter) 2024 Assembled Stitched Plastic
Lossless
A new solo exhibition will open at Firstsite 14th March continuing until 7th June 2026
In ‘Lossless’ artworks hang, lean, and stretch across the gallery, inviting moments of curiosity and unease. The exhibition includes a mix painting and sculptural work dating between 2022 - 2026. Riess’ sculpture combines the use of domestic materials and fabrics such as bin bags, threads, safety pins and cable ties hinting at human or animal forms, while others evoke damaged and discarded objects. Her paintings contain fictional spaces overlapping with reality and transient timelines. A highlight in the exhibition is the large-scale sculpture ‘The Cloud' from Riess’ 'Shapeshifter' series, responding to the online world commentating on unseen waste generated by cloud data, transmission signals, and the ever-present electrical systems supporting our digital lives.
In the words of Dr Josephine Berry:
“Rebecca Riess’s artworks don’t simply fictionalise the events of her life but allow her to hold them at a quizzical distance – while never letting down her guard. Peering at her paintings and installations is a lot like looking at the sea through a pair of goggles when snorkelling. Something ordinarily hidden suddenly appears with bizarre lucidity, while never losing its mystery or its potential threat.”
Exhibition dates: 14th March - 7th June 2026, Tuesdays - Sundays 10 - 5pm,
Firstsite, Lewis Gardens, High Street, Colchester, Essex, CO1 1JH
